BARTS HEARTS
Barts Hearts was the brain child of three ex cardiac patients of the Hospital. Jim Collins the first Chairman and Charlie Saggers, both By-Pass Patients and Phil Young a Heart Transplant patient as Sports Officer. He later won a Gold Medal at the World Transplant and paraplegic Games in the USA.
In 1989 Roger Hickling the Fund Raiser for the Hospital(who resigned in 1994) wrote to many ex patients informing them of the formation of the Association. Applications poured in and in no time there was over 300 members amongst them Don Magnus who was the then Administrator and in 1992 became the Chairman, the position he still holds. To date we have over 500 active members and have dispensed over £250,000 on the Cardiac and Intensive Care Wards at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Our three founders who are now deceased would have been really proud of this achievement. .
